The position taken at the recent meeting of the NEC of the Opposition Peoples National Party (PNP), to sanction persons who speaks of internal party matters in the public domain, is not going down well with influential Comrades.
Clyde Williams writing on his Twitter account, slammed the party`s position saying the “Party is going in the wrong direction.” He went on to state that: “muzzling members is not the answer, (but) fix(ing) the party is the answer” and “poor leadership is whats bringing PNP into disrepute.
But his tirade didnt stop there. Going back to what many say was an fatal mistake made by the PNP in the run up to the last General Election, not to debate, he said: ” One final Illustration. Last Elect(ion) Party powers took a nonsensical decision not to debate, would public non-support bring down discipline?”
But he wasn’t finished slamming the party leadership, as he said “genuine internal party grouses spilling over into the public domain are symptoms of a deeper problem: the failure of leadership, fix that.” And,” there is no existing structures in the Party that are effective in dealing with grouses. there were nuff (a lot) before (the) last election that went unfixed.”
LBC NEWS ANALYSIS.
The decision by the PNP NEC to threaten Comrades with expulsion if they speak to the media about internal political matters, has come in for withering criticism on Social Media from many, who thinks it is a retrograde step. The PNP has been hemorrhaging from all quarters before the last General Election which they lost to the JLP. Since that lost, things have gotten even worse, as Comrades Jostle and back stab each other in the public.
Things got even worse since the resignation of Former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who was pushed out of the Party by factions linked to Former finance Minister Peter Phillips, who lost twice in a runoff for Party President to her. The replacement for Mrs. Millers seat, has turned into a proxy war for the future of the PNP, between Peter Bunting and Phillip Paulwell, camps, who will vy for Party leadership, on or after the next election. That has plunged the party in a civil war.
Over the weekend, Karl Blake who was also a candidate to replace Mrs. Miller, said he would campaign for Portia
s choice Angela Brown Burke, even if it means been shot again. That drew a swift and scaving response from Smith Faceys camp that has written to the party Secretariat asking for Councillor Blake to be disciplined and threatening legal action.
The gag order from the PNP heirachy is reminiscent of a Dictator rather than the democratic institution that the PNP claims it is. It also shows how weak the present Leader of the PNP really is. He has no influence to get party members into line, so resorting to approving threats of expulsion from the PNP is the only way to try and get party members to desist from speaking publicly on any grouses they might have.
Will it work? Well, from Damian Crawford post yesterday on his Facebook page supporting Audrey Smith Facey Candidacy, it doesn’t seem so.
