Challenger in the recent campaign for president of the Opposition People’s National Party, Peter Bunting, as well as his campaign director and right hand man, Mark Golding, have held on to senior appointments in the party president Dr Peter Phillips’s Shadow Cabinet to be announced later today, it’s understood.
Bunting, who lost to Dr Phillips in the vote to decide who leads the 81-year-old party, will shadow the education and training portfolio, which, according to sources, he is comfortable with.
Golding will remain shadow minister of finance.
However, some prominent members of the campaign led by Bunting have found themselves left out of the shadow cabinet, among them former education shadow Ronald Thwaites; former shadow minister on health, Dr Dayton Campbell; Angela Brown Burke, who shadowed local government; and Ian Hayles, the former shadow minister of water.
It’s understood that Victor Wright, the Member of Parliament for Trelawny Northern will shadow agriculture; while veteran MP for St Thomas Eastern, Dr Fenton Ferguson will take over responsibilities for water from Hayles.
Mikael Phillips will remain as shadow minister for transport and works; while Dwayne Vaz will shadow sports and entertainment, Dr K Wykeham McNeill remains at tourism and Fitz Jackson remains at security.
It is also understood that Dr Morais Guy, MP for St Mary Central will be the new leader of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives, a position once held by Phillip Paulwell, who has been appointed campaign director for the party in the lead-up to the next general election expected next year, but due in February 2021.
