BREAKING NEWS.

LBC NEWS is calling the By Election in East Portland. Ann-Marie Vaz has won. With a Ten percent swing to the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and Port Antonio a traditional PNP area JLP winning four out of five boxes, it’s safe to call it for Ann-Marie Vaz.

Updated story.

East Portland will have a new member of parliament, the JLP’s Ann-Marie Vaz. Mrs. Vaz won the By Election held today by 306 votes, beating the Opposition PNP Candidate Damion Crawford. East Portland has not voted labour for over 30 years and was considered to be the PNP’s 9 safest seat. Mrs. Vaz who now join her husband as a Member of Parliament will be creating history as the first female to represent East Portland in the Nation’s parliament.

Mrs. Vaz polled 9917 votes to Crawford 9611 votes making her winning margin 306 votes. There was a Ten percent swing from the PNP to the JLP. Mrs. Vaz had to overcome a deficit of over 2000 votes to win the Constituency.

This is the third By-election thrashing Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips, has been on the receiving end of, from JLP leader Andrew Holness, and the well oiled and marauding JLP election machinery. It comes on the heels of the 2016 General and Local Government elections lost for the PNP. He was the PNP campaign manager for the then general election.

Mrs. Vaz takes over a Constituency that has very poor road infrastructure, lack of potable water and all round neglect for the last 30 years. The Constituency suffers from high unemployment levels especially among the younger generation.
