ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Following a spike in robberies and other crimes in the south central town of Santa Cruz, the local police have organised a community meeting for 5:30 pm Wednesday afternoon at the St Matthews Anglican Church Hall here.

Among those scheduled to address the meeting is the police chief in St Elizabeth, Superintendent Lanford Salmon.

While the focus will be on crime in Santa Cruz, it’s expected that criminal activity in other sections of the parish will also come under scrutiny at the meeting.

Residents of St Elizabeth were particularly disturbed by news on Monday of the shooting death of a security guard at a People’s Cooperative (PC) bank in Newell, south west St Elizabeth.

Police reports are that about 1:25 pm armed men entered the bank, which they proceeded to rob of an unspecified sum of money.

Before making their escape they shot the security guard identified as Frederick Dennis of Holland district and took his firearm.

Dennis was pronounced dead at hospital.
