Vocabulary.com states this about the word prosperous. The adjective prosperous often describes a person or a person’s future, but it can apply to anything that’s experiencing growth and success. Prosperous derives from the Latin word prosperus, meaning “doing well.” Great pronouns of this happy word include golden, well-heeled, flourishing, and thriving.
The word is then not an original creation of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), as a matter of fact it is not even an original creation of the English language. Its Borrowed from Latin. Both of those languages are Hundreds of years old. But even with that in mind the Peoples National Party (PNP) refused to sign an agreement with the Government and Civil Society groups yesterday (December 7), because they find the word Prosperous, offensive! Its not only LBC that finds that incredible! Everyone with a brain finds it incredible!
The PNP out going Leader Portia Simpson-Miller in her letter of objection, cited the changing of the name of the partnership and questioning why the name wasn’t left as it was. She went on to state that the inclusion of the word Prosperous, is partisan in nature, since it is the root word from which the JLP Campaign Slogan “Prosperity”derives from. Now that is beyond belief. This is the first time in living memory that a political party has refused to partner with the government in this country because of the word, prosperous. It is extraordinary!
It goes to the heart of what a supporter of the PNP said in an open letter asking for Simpson-Miller to go recently, that the party is “bereft of ideas and a vision for the future of the masses.”
That is exactly what is going on here. The party does not have a “thinking Center” so it cannot come up with a credible objection to not signing on to the agreement. A party that has lost the little legitimacy it had before, is throwing a tantrum. The last final act of a desperate leader that has been nothing but a disaster for this country.
The PNP is finding very little to stand on so they are trying to make Hay out of just about any little minor thing they can possible lay hands on. It is just childish to be staying away from something that is in the best interest of the country, because they have an objection to a harmless word, that denotes happiness and progress. What the PNP is doing in essence is finding a way not to be yoked into an agreement that looks like they are giving ascent to the programs and policies of the JLP, which in some respects is what this agreement is. While that can be seen as a move all Opposition party`s make to avoid having limited room to maneuver in criticizing the Government, it would have been much better if they had just said so and leave it that. But to be advancing an argument of politicization of the word Prosperous as a defense is just childish, immature and embarrassing.
